September’s been a pretty crazy month of announcements, and now HTC are trying to impress us with their showing in New York. New Windows Phone 8 devices are expected, although an updated One X is also rumoured. Whatever happens, we’ll bring you the latest news here!
All times are given in BST. This liveblog has now ended.
16:00 Let’s go.
16:04 Things are running a bit behind, but it’s safe to say that we will see at least the Accord/8X today, after this picture from PhoneArena.
16:05 Joe Belfiore, head of Windows Phone stuff at Microsoft, just tweeted this. If there was any doubt that WP8 would be the main focus today, this should end it.
16:10 While we wait for things to kick off, here’s another leaked pic.
16:13 Some have speculated that the dots and circles everywhere may be hinting at a new HTC logo, but here we can clearly see that it is just a Beats plug.
16:16 Peter Chou is on stage talking about Microsoft. Also embargoes have been lifted, unveiling the 4.3″ 720p polycarbonate 8X and the WVGA mid-range 8S.
16:18 The 8S is 4″ and has a dual-core S4 clocked at 1GHz.
16:19 Ballmer alert!
16:20 The 8X comes in 4 colours, has 1GB RAM, NFC, a 1.5GHz dual-core S4 and possibly the best screen ever in the shape of a 4.3″ 720p SLCD2.
16:23 Colours! Ballmer!
16:24 Both phones will hit AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile in the US, along with 150 other carriers worldwide. Here’s a press shot.
16:29 The design guy is going on about design being human.
16:30 The 8X profile is ‘magically thin’.
16:33 The 8S feels ‘playful’. I’m not sure what that’s supposed to mean.
16:35 The 8X has curved Gorilla Glass, similar to the Lumia 800. This is a good thing.
16:36 The 8X has the same camera unit as the One X, which is a good thing indeed. See some of our sample shots here.
16:39 They’ve both got Beats Audio, but that doesn’t really mean anything.
16:41 Now Jason MacKenzie, president of the company, is on stage talking about their deal with Microsoft.
16:42 “The 8X and 8S are THE signature phones of Windows Phone 8.”
16:43 Both phones will be out in November, giving us a rough timeframe for the release of the Samsung Ativ S and Nokia’s Lumias too.
16:44 And we’re done already! I’m off to grab more specific information on these things.
