Is Facebook looking to buy Opera to make its own web browser?

Fresh from floating itself on the NASDAQ at a valuation of $104 billion, only to see share prices plummet by almost 20% in a week, and a $1 billion acquisition of Instagram, the rumour mill has sparked up again, this time suggesting that Facebook is set to acquire Norwegian firm Opera Software. Pocket-lint’s sources claim that Mark Zuckerberg’s company is looking to create its own web browser, possibly one compatible with the oft-rumoured Facebook phone, and that it is looking towards Opera to achieve this goal. The Next Web also cited a different source close to the browser maker, stating that the company was not only in talks regarding a potential acquisition with multiple suitors, but a hiring freeze has been introduced – a sign that big things may be coming. A Facebook browser could look very similar to RockMelt, a browser with Facebook integration and built from Google’s Chromium engine, but partnering with or acquiring a company like Opera would give Facebook independence from third-parties such as Google, thus ensuring total control over the browser, while also the potential to tap in to Opera’s 270 million monthly users. All of this speculation certainly seems plausible, and with Facebook’s tendency to roll out new features perpetually, it might not be long until we find out the truth.

Chrome extension hides annoying Twitter trends about the likes of Justin Bieber and One Direction

Ever gone onto Twitter and seen the trending topics occupied by ridiculous statements from the fans of Justin Bieber and the like? Things like these seem all too common.






Thankfully Ben Hooper, aka @mythofechelon, has developed a Chrome extension that filters out trends relating to Justin Bieber, Rebecca Black, Lady GaGa, Jedward and One Direction, with more plagues artists to follow at a later date. The trend-purging extension is free to download from his site, and Hooper would love some feedback on Twitter or by email. Watch the video below to see the extension in action.

Microsoft says Internet Explorer can make a comeback like bird-based communication

We all hate Internet Explorer, and even Microsoft knows that. Their new ad campaign for IE9 has a guy who says that, before he discovered IE9, he did what we all do and uninstalled Internet Explorer after downloading another browser. He then proceeds to declare his love for IE9 and a cat policewoman. Watch the video below, and check out Microsoft’s comeback prospects in some hilarious graphs too.

Google promotes I/O 2012 with a free Chrome game

Google’s annual I/O developer conference takes place in the Moscone Centre in San Francisco this June and, to promote the event before registrations open in two weeks, they have released an HTML5-based game – another addition to the fantastic list of Chrome Experiments. The input/output game involves designing contraptions to get a ball from one side of the screen to the other in true Rube Goldberg style. Google will also feature some of the best creations at the conference from June 27-29, so grab it from the Chrome Web Store and get building!

Angry Birds to win your Facebook hearts on Valentine’s Day

Rovio have announced that Angry Birds, our runner-up for Best App of 2011, will launch on Facebook on February 14th (aka Valentine’s Day) having already conquered every other platform under the sun. In the announcement that Time said was sure to kill office productivity, founder Peter Vesterbacka explained that the game would be free to play, but with premium content such as the Mighty Eagle available for the 40% of users who are expected to be willing to pay for such madness. Leaderboards will also find their way on to the Facebook version, cueing mass bird-flinging wars in the Digixav offices.
